Did you know that your family video can earn a cash prize? Every day experts from GoPro choose the best photo and video. They award the best creators by thousands of dollars or significant discounts. The best content could be promoted on GoPro’s official website and social channels. You can eventually become famous around the world 🙂
You probably think that only adrenaline junkies doing all those crazy things could win. Nope, regular families win too as we did! I share our personal experience and disclose the key points to win this award. Although picking up our prize was a little bittersweet.
In this post, I am going to show you what content to submit, where and how. You will learn what requirements you must satisfy. I summarized tips and tricks coming directly from GoPro experts how to win their awards.
What You Can Submit
You can compete in these 3 categories:
- unedited photo
- unedited raw video clip
- video edits (multiple clips with effects, music etc.)
Actually, the submission itself isn’t divided. You just upload the file and GoPro will assign it to the proper category.
Your submitted content must follow these general rules:
- shoot 100% on GoPro
- the highest resolution and the highest quality
- use only music that you have a license for (tips where to download free music)
- no content from major events (any recognizable people in your photos or videos will need to provide permission that the content can be used)
- quality over quantity (shorter video is better)
- no watermarks
In addition, specific requirements must be met in each category.
Don’t crop or filter photos and don’t upload screenshots. Photos must be original and unedited. The .jpg file size must exceed 1MB.
Upload original and unedited raw .mp4 file in HD or higher resolution (720p, 1080p, 1440p, 2.7K, 4K).
The best video edit must attract the audience by an impressive story. It should include the following key components:
- introducing a hero
- establishment of the location
- moments of tension or apex
- fun, humorous or breathtaking conclusion
You can find many examples of storytelling videos at GoPro channel.
Just a reminder – all parts of the video edit must be shot by GoPro camera. Upload the highest possible quality. If you make your video edit in GoPro Studio, export it in Archive/Edit option as it is shown in this tutorial.
How to Win GoPro Awards
The most important factors in this contest are image and story quality.
Here are couple more tips from GoPro experts.
Tip #1: Clean Lens
Tip #2: Good Lighting
Shoot outdoors during sunny days if possible. The best time is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sunlight is not so intense.
Tip #3: Story
Think about a story before you go to action. Have in your mind some basic screenplay with its three main parts – beginning, middle and end. Introduce yourself and tell what you are going to do. Take shots of action from multiple angles and then show the result. In the meantime, have your camera always ready to capture unexpected moments.
Tip #4: Different Angles and Mounts
Try several different angles including untraditional views. Make sure that the viewer will understand what is going on. Different mounts help to create a great variety of angles. We often use 3-Way arm, head strap, clamp mount and more.
Tip #5: Include Timelapse
It is a nice way how to set the stage before the action. We use timelapse in our family videos too. For example, from packing our stuff before a trip begins or building a tent at a campsite. For these fast actions, I set the shortest interval (0.5 second). For slow actions, for example sunset, I would use 5 or 10 second interval.
Tip #6: Follow Cam
For awesome follow cam shots, use 1080p resolution and 60 fps. This allows smooth slow motion and high-quality image at the same time. Don’t hold the camera in your hand, rather mount it on an extension pole (for example 3-Way Arm). This reduces shake.
Tip #7: High Resolution
Set higher resolution (1080p, 2.7K or 4K) if you plan to submit your video to GoPro Awards contest.
Tip #8: Right Frame Rate
Choose the right frame rate (how many frames per second):
- 24 fps for slow action in low light conditions (indoor, dark shots, sunset)
- 60-120 fps for fast action (slow motion playback) in bright light (outdoors, sunny weather)
Tip #9: High-quality Sound
Whenever you don’t need waterproof housing, use a naked frame instead. This allows recording much better sound. Natural sound helps viewers to be closer to your adventure and make your video more engaging.

How to Submit Your Photo or Video
Go to official website GoPro Awards and click SUBMIT NOW button. You will be asked to log in or create a new account if you don’t have one yet.
Choose a file which you want to submit. You should upload the highest quality file. Expect long time to upload depending on the size of the file. When I uploaded 3 GB file it took more than an hour. People in your house should not use the internet for demanding activities during the upload. My husband was complaining that he cannot play his online video game and even watch the video on YouTube.
You need to fill a required information about your video. The most important fields are title of your story and description. Make sure it catches an eye and it sounds compelling. GoPro also wants to know the location of your video and products you used during filming. Then choose a challenge (category) which you want to compete in. Check one or more activities (family, education, how-to or various kinds of sports). If the music is featured in your video, you must also fill artist’s name and song. Don’t forget to use only music that you have a license for.
A confirmation will appear on the screen after the upload is completed. GoPro will also send you a confirmation email (only for the first submission that day). Don’t worry if you cannot see uploaded content in your media manager. GoPro Awards content is separate.
What You Can Win
You can win one of the following awards:
- $500 (photos)
- $1000 (raw clips)
- $5000 (video edits)
- discount coupon codes (50 %, 30 % etc.) in GoPro shop
- possible additional compensation when one of your photos or videos is published on GoPro’s social channels
If you win a cash prize don’t forget to pay applicable taxes.
Winning Award – Our Experience
GoPro experts review and award the content daily. But it doesn’t mean they do it immediately after you submit it. We received this email approximately one month after submission of our video edit:
The email included also a discount code which should be entered during the purchase at GoPro shop. To my surprise, there wasn’t any possibility to enter the code.
I contacted GoPro customer support but it was quite a pain. At first, I tried chat but they told me I must do this by phone. My assigned representative had no idea what GoPro Awards is. I had to explain many times that I submitted my content to GoPro Awards contest, won a coupon code and want to use it. I think she didn’t understand anyway but at least she tried to enter my coupon code into their system. It didn’t work. She asked me to send a screenshot of the confirmation email. Then we finally proceeded and my discount code was used in my purchase. Hooray:)
Here is our winning video:
Now, let’s summarize why this video was awarded. It surely is the strong story with unexpected moments, graduating at the end. The video has 3 main parts:
- beginning – packing the stuff for the family trip
- several actions – nice family moments and terrible events put in contrast
- happy end – we celebrate our survival with a glass of wine
The video includes a few timelapses for setting the stage. We captured most of the actions from different angles. The quality of the video was sufficient (1080p, 30 fps). All these things correspond exactly with the tips from GoPro mentioned above.
I hope you know everything you need to shoot your best masterpiece and you will win your award too! Or did you already win? Please share your experience with us in the comments below this post.
